CPT. Kirk and the Devil Horns

American rock/fusion drummer and singer, Kirk Covington (aka CPT. Kirk) is still firing on all cylinders. This is after decades of being a sideman at the forefront of Contemporary Jazz and Fusion music. Performing with legends like Joe Zawinul, Robben Ford and Allan Holdsworth, the Texas native continued to tour the world as a member of Fusion superstars, Tribal Tech. Striking out on his own, the “CPT.” has four solo albums to date. The latest, “CPT. Kirk and the Devil Horns” is a tour-de-force of his immense talent as a singer, pianist, drummer and songwriter.

“Always The Same,” one of the catchier tunes I’ve heard in a while, is flush with top-tier drumming and keys, expressive vocals, tasty guitar and a horn section to beat. This is superb musicianship and one tight band. A flash of jazz-fusion, contemporary R&B and pop, this song grabbed me within five seconds. You just can’t beat that rhythm and the piano locking it down. The song is written by Kirk Covington and Russ Miller, produced by Kirk (CPT.) Covington.

The “Devil Horns” project is 1970’s Chicago meets Weather Report, with the Pop sensibilities of a forgone era of classic compositions. With original songs and exciting arrangements of Pop vocal pieces, “CPT. Kirk and the Devil Horns” delivers a solid look at the huge pool of talent that Covington draws upon.

Kirk Covington has become recognized as one of the most dynamic and versatile drummers in the world. His strong vocals and keyboard chops make him a uniquely talented artist. Born in Midland, TX, he attended North Texas College of Music where he met bassist Gary Willis, with whom he later joined Tribal Tech. Kirk has toured with Scott Henderson and bass player John Humphrey as a trio.
