Native Texan Sam, Morrow releases his new video “Money Ain’t A Thing” from his contemporary rock and roll album, Gettin’ By On Gettin’ Down’ released in 2020 by Forty Below Records and produced by president/label owner Eric Corne. The album is a guitar-driven and groove-heavy salute to some of the best that modern roots/rock has to offer.
A driving rock and roll tune with Country/rock overtones, “Money Ain’t A Thing” features Morrow’s smoky vocals, slinky guitars, tight drumming and bass. Morrow pushes back on the trappings of Instagram filters and virtual interactions in the lyrics, direct in his songwriting and not one for B.S. He and the band have a tight grip on rhythm and feel.
After three previous albums, Sam Morrow moved to Los Angeles and connected with Eric Corne who co-wrote most of the songs with him, and drummer/percussionist Matt Tecu (Echo In the Canyon.) Morrow and Corne recorded the album in an L.A. studio owned by The Doors’ guitarist, Robby Krieger. The end result is a record that features sharply-written insightful tunes from a songwriter at the top of his game. His sound is unique, and several on Gettin’ By On Gettin’ Down’ are funky with interesting rhythms and hints of his influences such as Little feat, Los Lobos and Queens of the Stone Age.
Not one to take life too seriously, this video showcases Morrow’s playfulness and even goofiness, if you will. We can all use some of that. The song is a lighthearted take on the roll money plays in our society, sprinkled with bits of social commentary.
