Ruth Moody Enlists Joey Landreth For ‘The Spell of the Lilac Bloom’

Canadian artist Ruth Moody (Wailin’ Jennys) is sharing an exclusive performance video for her “exquisite” new single, “The Spell of the Lilac Bloom” exclusively at Folk Alley.” They praise the song’s “spellbinding layers of vocals, instruments, and lyrics as it evokes the newness and the hope of love.” Moody enlists fellow Winnipeg artist, guitar great Joey Landreth (The Brothers Landreth), to duet on the song. The studio version of the single will be available on all streaming services Friday, May 3 HERE

Moody shares: “I wrote this song while I was living in Portland Oregon, and had recently found out that I was pregnant with my son. I was full of wonder and excitement but also coming to terms with the fact that life was about to change forever. It was spring and the lilacs were in bloom—that scent would put me in a dream when I’d go out walking. One day I went out into the rain and the words to this song came into my head. I went home and put it to banjo. I played it for my partner and he immediately heard it as a duet. I was thrilled when I asked Joey Landreth to play and sing on this while I was in the studio and he said ‘Yes!’”

Pre-order The Wanderer Here

This is the third single from Moody’s forthcoming album, Wanderer, her first solo album in over a decade. As a founding and current member of Billboard-charting and JUNO-award winning folk trio, The Wailin’ Jennys, Moody’s clear soprano and talents as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist will come as no surprise. Recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville, the self-penned 10-song album was co-produced by Moody and Dan Knobler (Allison Russell, Lake Street Dive) and mixed by Tucker Martine (Madison Cunningham, First Aid Kit).

From the first note, the listener is immersed in a lush and intimate world, welcomed by sounds at once classic, mysterious, and enchanting. The album takes the listener on a mesmerizing journey through time and space. The climactic title track, “Wanderer,” embodies the true spirit of love and belonging that we all seek in its repeated final chorus, “love is calling you home.”
